Framed Print of Atmosphere and airglow seen from Shuttle
View of the airglow of Earths atmosphere, seen at sunset from Space Shuttle Atlantis. The blue colour is caused by reflections of the suns light in the atmosphere. Orange sunlit clouds are seen just below the horizon as the sun sets. To the left of centre is the planet Venus, destination for the Magellan probe deployed during this mission, STS-30. Shuttle Atlantis was launched on 4 May 1989, deploying Magellan six hours into the flight. The rest of the mission was devoted to a mix of materials and life science experiments. Atlantis made a safe return to Earth on 8 May 1989 after 64 orbits.
