Autonomous airborne refuelling testing. F-18 Hornet aircraft being refuelled in mid-air during a flight to test autonomous airborne refuelling technology. This project, given the name of Autonomous Airborne Refueling Demonstration (aRD), took place from 2005 to 2007. On this flight, the pilot Dick Ewers, and flight test engineer Leslie Molzahn, are seen with their hands raised from the controls as the aircraft flew itself into the refuelling drogue (right). This research aids the development of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) refuelling. Photographed on 2 May 2007.
