Betty Grable (1916-1973), US actress. Born Elizabeth Ruth Grable, she made her debut as a child actor in 1929. She rose to fame in the 1940s, appearing in a succession of musical films. Renowned for her beauty and her legs (which were insured by her film studio). She became a pin-up girl during World War II, and was known as the girl with the million dollar legs. Here, her stockings, made of the new material nylon, are about to be auctioned at a World War II bond rally. Grables stockings typically sold for around 40, 000 US dollars a pair at such auctions. During the war, around 185 billion US dollars were raised through war bonds. Photographed circa 1942.
