Framed Print of Bird flu vaccination
Bird flu vaccination. Veterinarians injecting a goose with a vaccine against the H5N1 strain of avian influenza (bird flu). The H5N1 strain was first detected in Southeast Asia around 1997, but the first major outbreak of the most virulent form occurred in 2004. Since then it has spread across Asia and Europe and parts of Africa, being carried by wild migrating birds. Domestic poultry have little chance of surviving infection, and it has killed millions of birds in farms and zoos. As of May 2007, there have been almost 300 cases of bird-to-human transmission, causing over 170 deaths. Widespread vaccination of birds is done to help halt its spread. Photographed at Moscow Zoo, Russia. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © RIA NOVOSTI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
