Edmond Halley, caricature C015 / 6703

Edmond Halley (1656-1742). Caricature of the British astronomer Sir Edmond Halley. Halley is famous for deducing that the comets seen in 1456, 1531, 1607 and 1682 were the same object. He then successfully predicted its return in 1758 and the comet was subsequently named after him. In 1718 he observed the proper motion of the stars, which had been thought of as fixed in the sky. He was clerk and editor of the Royal Society and was appointed Astronomer Royal in 1720. His other achievements included devising and using the first diving bell, mapping the Earths winds, constructing mortality tables and linking the aurora borealis with the Earths magnetic field

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white caricature print captures the essence of Sir Edmond Halley, a renowned British astronomer from the 17th and 18th centuries. With a comical twist, this illustration showcases Halley's significant contributions to the field of astronomy. Halley is famously known for his deduction that several comets observed throughout history were actually one celestial object. His prediction of its return in 1758 proved accurate, leading to the comet being named after him - Halley's Comet. In addition to his work on comets, Halley also observed the proper motion of stars, challenging the prevailing belief that they were fixed in the sky. This discovery revolutionized our understanding of celestial bodies. Beyond astronomy, Halley was a man of many talents. He devised and used the first diving bell, mapped Earth's winds, constructed mortality tables, and even linked aurora borealis with Earth's magnetic field. As an esteemed member of society, he served as clerk and editor for the Royal Society before being appointed Astronomer Royal in 1720. Knighted for his achievements, Sir Edmond Halley left an indelible mark on scientific history. This monochrome artwork offers a glimpse into this remarkable scientist's life and legacy. Against a clean white background with wind elements subtly incorporated into his portrait, it encapsulates both historical significance and comedic charm – truly capturing Sir Edmond Halley's multifaceted persona.
