Framed Print of Castaway at sea, Tichbourne case
Castaway at sea, Tichbourne case. Roger Tichbourne, the heir to a large fortune and baronetcy, had been missing presumed dead after the shipwreck of the ship Bella off Brazil in April 1854. In 1866, a claimant from Australia claimed to be Tichbourne and was accepted by Tichbournes mother. A failed civil case led to a criminal case in which the claimant was convicted in 1874 of perjury and found to be Arthur Orton, son of a butcher from Wapping. Orton, despite popular support, served ten years in prison and died in poverty. Lithograph from volume 6 (1878) of the 9-volume The Trial at Bar of Sir Roger C. D. Tichborne (1875-1880). Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © MIDDLE TEMPLE LIBRARY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
