Early electric train
Early electric train. Historical artwork of an early electric train used in France. This type of train was developed from experiments carried out in 1893 on the Nord (north) network in France. The train is based on designs by the French engineer Auvert. The locomotive (right) is followed by the battery van (providing the power) and the dynamometer car (helping to generate power). This train was capable of pulling a weight of 100 tonnes, and could reach speeds of 75 kilometres per hour. This was inferior to the results obtained by steam locomotives. Urban electric trains were developed the following year. Artwork from A Travers l Electricite (G. Dary, Paris, 1900)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an early electric train that played a significant role in the history of transportation. Developed from groundbreaking experiments conducted on the Nord network in France during 1893, this particular train is based on designs by the ingenious French engineer Auvert. The locomotive, positioned on the right side of the image, leads the way followed by a battery van responsible for providing power and a dynamometer car assisting in power generation. Capable of pulling an impressive weight of 100 tonnes and reaching speeds up to 75 kilometers per hour, this early electric train was undoubtedly a remarkable feat at its time. However, it fell short when compared to steam locomotives' achievements. Nevertheless, this pioneering invention paved the way for future advancements in urban electric trains. The artwork itself exudes historical charm and offers us a glimpse into late 19th-century technology and transportation. It beautifully captures both the essence of progress and innovation as well as pays homage to France's rich railway heritage. Displayed within A Travers l'Electricite (G. Dary, Paris, 1900), this art piece not only serves as a visual delight but also stands as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of technological advancement throughout history.
