Electric tram junction points, 1897
Electric tram junction points. 19th-century artwork of the layout of contact pads at a junction for an electric tram system. The layout ensures that traction (electric power to push the tram) is maintained as it turns the corner. Electric trams had been demonstrated in France in 1881, but were not built and opened until the 1890s. These junction points are part of what was called the Lacroix system. Artwork from the first volume (1897) of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton (1872-1940)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork showcases the intricate layout of contact pads at an electric tram junction, providing a glimpse into the technological advancements of that era. The image, taken from the first volume of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle by Jules-Louis Breton, transports us back to a time when electric trams were revolutionizing urban transportation. Intricately designed and carefully planned, these junction points formed part of the renowned Lacroix system. They ensured seamless traction as trams navigated corners, allowing for efficient movement through bustling city streets. This blueprint-like illustration provides a bird's-eye view of the junction, revealing its complex network of electrical connections and rail tracks. Electric trams had already been demonstrated in France in 1881 but only became widely implemented in the 1890s. This historical artifact serves as a testament to French engineering prowess and their commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology during this period. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of nostalgia to this piece, emphasizing its historical significance. It is fascinating to observe how early engineers tackled challenges related to urban transport electrification over a century ago. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing print, we are reminded not only of our progress since then but also how innovation continues to shape our cities today.
