Framed Print of Epicurus
Epicurus. Bust of the Greek philosopher Epicurus (c.341-270 BC). He extended the idea (due to Democritus) that matter consists of atoms, differing in size and shape. In 305 BC, Epicurus established a successful school of philosophy in Athens, where he lived. He is said to have written over 300 scholarly volumes on varied subjects, but only fragments of his work survived. His followers believed that pleasure (meaning freedom from pain and anxiety) is the highest good. After his death the philosophy of Epicureanism continued to attract followers until the 3rd century AD. Epicurean has since come to mean devoted to the indulgence of sensual pleasures. Vatican museum.
