Framed Print of Excavation of mammoth bones
Excavation of mammoth bones, Siberia. String has been used to create a grid to allow accurate identification of the location of each bone. This will allow later reconstruction of the site so that the bones can be correctly placed together to reconstruct the mammoth skeletons. The bones have been found preserved in the Siberian permafrost layer (the layer of permanently frozen soil). The mammoth was an elephant-like mammal that inhabited northern regions of the world and became extinct only a few thousand years ago. Thousands of mammoth remains have been discovered in the permafrost in Siberia, Russia. Photographed near Volchya Griva, in September 1970.
