Hurricane Ophelia, 10th September 2005

Hurricane Ophelia on the east coast of the USA on 10th September 2005. The Delmarva Peninsula is seen at lower right. Ophelia did not make landfall but moved up the east coast of the USA. At its peak it had sustained winds of 135 kilometres per hour, and high winds and heavy rain lashed the region. The 2005 hurricane season was the most active since records began. It was also the first time that the pre-allotted names for hurricanes and tropical storms ran out (after Wilma), and the tropical storm that developed on 22nd October was called Alpha. Photographed from the International Space Station, which orbits Earth at an altitude of around 360 kilometres
