Faradays electric motor
Homopolar electric motor. Demonstration model of Faradays electric motor, the first device to turn electrical energy into mechanical motion. The two containers would be filled with mercury and a permanent magnet mounted vertically in each. When a current was applied to the containers, the bridge between them completed a circuit and the hanging arms would rotate around the magnet. This established the physics that would eventually lead to the invention of the electric motor. This model, made by Faraday in 1821, is now on display at the Royal Institution, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Faraday's electric motor, a groundbreaking invention that marked the beginning of converting electrical energy into mechanical motion. The image captures a demonstration model of this historic device, which is now proudly exhibited at the Royal Institution in London. The model consists of two containers filled with mercury and vertically mounted permanent magnets. When an electric current is applied to the containers, a circuit is completed through the bridge between them, causing the hanging arms to rotate around the magnet. This ingenious setup established crucial principles of physics that would eventually pave the way for the development of modern electric motors. Dating back to 1821 and created by Faraday himself, this remarkable model represents a pivotal moment in scientific history. Its circular motion symbolizes not only Faraday's revolutionary contribution but also highlights how electromagnetism can be harnessed to generate mechanical energy. Displayed against a clean white background in this studio shot, every intricate detail of this nineteenth-century marvel comes alive. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back in time to witness an important milestone in our understanding and utilization of electricity. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and stands as an emblematic artifact within the rich tapestry of our technological heritage.
