Framed Print of Feeding mosquito
Feeding mosquito. Macrophotograph of an Anopheles stephensi mosquito feeding on human skin. A female Anopheles mosquito feeds on vertebrate blood by using her proboscis (lower centre) to pierce the skin. The blood meal helps her produce her eggs. If she is infected with the Plasmodium malaria parasite, her saliva will transmit this to the human. Malaria, a debilitating and intermittent fever that can kill, affects hundreds of millions in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. A. stephensi is an important vector for the transmission of malaria to humans in India. Magnification unknown.
