Framed Print of Great Chicago Fire, 1871 C016 / 4314
Great Chicago Fire. This fire in Chicago, Illinois, USA, started on 8 October 1871 and continued until the early hours of 10 October. The city at the time was two-thirds constructed from wood, and a large area was destroyed with over a hundred people killed. Some 100, 000 were left homeless as they fled the fire (bottom) carrying what they could. This view of the fire is from the west side of the Chicago River. This fire was one of the costliest disasters of the 19th century in the USA. The effects of rebuilding helped Chicagos growth into one of the largest cities in the USA. This lithograph was published by Gibson and Companys Steam Press.
