Framed Print of HaRP array for auoral research, artwork
HaRP array for auoral research. Artwork of activity in the ionosphere (coloured lights) being triggered and detected by the array of antennas of the HaRP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program). Planned by US agencies, construction took place between 1993 and 2007. The main array, the Ionospheric Research Instrument (IRI), consists of 180 antennas located in Gakona, Alaska, USA. It transmits a high-frequency radio signal upwards into the ionosphere, with the resulting excitation detected by receivers. The effect is similar to that of aurorae, but of much lesser intensity.
