Aeneas Saving Anchises at the Fall of Troy, 1587-1588. Creator: Federico Barocci (Italian
Aeneas Saving Anchises at the Fall of Troy, 1587-1588. In book two of Virgils epic poem The Aeneid (29-19 bc), the Trojan hero Aeneas escapes with his family from the burning city of Troy and its Greek invaders. Here the artist shows them making their way through a lavish, classical corridor. Aeneas carries his elderly father Anchises, who holds their household gods. These acts stress the theme of domestic virtue. Aeneass son Ascanius and his wife Creusa follow, although Creusas separation from the principal group alludes to her fate; she will not survive their flight. This drawing was at one time owned by the painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Other sketches for Aeneas, Anchises, and Creusa can be seen in the right margin

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Federico Barocci's masterpiece, "Aeneas Saving Anchises at the Fall of Troy" created in 1587-1588. Inspired by Virgil's epic poem The Aeneid, the artwork depicts the heroic Trojan warrior Aeneas leading his family to safety amidst the chaos and destruction of their burning city. In this scene, they navigate a grand classical corridor as Aeneas carries his elderly father Anchises, who clings onto their household gods - symbolizing their commitment to domestic virtue. The composition also foreshadows tragedy with Creusa, Aeneas' wife, separated from the main group. Her fate is sealed as she will not survive their desperate flight. This drawing was once owned by renowned painter Peter Paul Rubens and showcases Barocci's exceptional skill in capturing emotion and narrative within a single image. Heritage Art presents this remarkable piece through a high-quality print that allows viewers to appreciate every intricate detail. The banister technique combined with brown wash and yellow gouache creates depth and texture while traces of white add highlights that bring life to the figures. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this work exemplifies Barocci's mastery as an Italian artist during the 16th century. Heritage Images invites you to explore this timeless masterpiece that beautifully captures one of literature's most memorable moments in visual form.
