King Jamess Room, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, 1894. Creator: Unknown

King Jamess Room, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, 1894. The King James Drawing Room takes its name from the life-size statue of James I, presented by the King himself, which stands above the mantelpiece. The sculpture is made from stone painted to look like bronze. The marble chimneypiece was carved by the Kings Master Sculptor, Maximilian Colt. Built in 1485, the Royal Palace of Hatfield was where Elizabeth I spent some of her childhood. The present house was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, Chief Minister to King James I. From Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes. [The Werner Company of Chicago, 1894]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of King James's Room in Hatfield House, Hertfordshire. The room derives its name from a remarkable life-size statue of James I, gifted by the King himself, which proudly stands above the exquisite mantelpiece. Crafted with meticulous detail, this stone sculpture is skillfully painted to resemble bronze, adding an air of regality to the space. The opulent marble chimneypiece adorning the room was masterfully carved by Maximilian Colt, the esteemed sculptor appointed by King James I. Built in 1485 and later reconstructed in 1611 under Robert Cecil's guidance – Chief Minister to King James I – Hatfield House holds historical significance as it served as a residence for Elizabeth I during her formative years. As captured in this photograph taken in 1894 for Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes, one can marvel at the ornate interior decoration and furniture that exude elegance and sophistication. This image offers a glimpse into a time when artistry and craftsmanship were highly valued. Hatfield House remains an enduring tourist attraction today due to its rich heritage and architectural splendor. This print serves as both a testament to British history and an invitation for travelers to explore this magnificent country house steeped in royal legacy.
