Suspense, 1871. Artist: Joseph Swain
Suspense, 1871. Britannia waits anxiously outside the door of the Prince of Waless sick chamber. Since Prince Alberts death some ten years earlier, Queen Victorias continued withdrawal from public life had attracted increasing criticism, especially as demands on the public purse to support her large family had continued to grow. The Republican movement was growing vociferous until, late in 1871, the Prince of Wales was stricken with typhoid fever, the illness that had ended his fathers life. For some days, the Prince of Wales was in great danger and his recovery sparked a outburst of public support for the monarchy and a thanksgiving service was held at St Pauls at the end of February 1872. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 23, 1871

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Suspense, 1871" captures a pivotal moment in British history. Painted by the talented artist Joseph Swain and featuring an allegorical figure of Britannia, the image depicts Queen Victoria anxiously waiting outside the door of her son, the Prince of Wales', sick chamber. The backdrop for this scene is set against a tumultuous period in Victorian England. Following the death of Prince Albert ten years prior, Queen Victoria's withdrawal from public life had drawn criticism from an increasingly vocal Republican movement. The demands on public funds to support her large family only added fuel to the fire. However, everything changed when tragedy struck again as the Prince of Wales fell ill with typhoid fever –the same illness that claimed his father's life. For days, his condition remained critical and uncertain. But miraculously, he recovered. The prince's recovery sparked a remarkable outpouring of public support for the monarchy. In February 1872, a thanksgiving service was held at St Paul's Cathedral to express gratitude for his survival. This powerful image serves as a reminder of how fragile and precarious royal lineage can be while showcasing Britain's unwavering loyalty towards its monarchs during times of crisis. With its monochrome aesthetic and intricate engraving details created by John Tenniel and Joseph Swain themselves, this heritage print stands as both a historical artifact and an artistic masterpiece capturing one nation's collective suspense turning into relief and celebration.
