Human body postures, historical artwork

Human postures, historical artwork. The images show an outline of the shape of the body in four postures; standing, bowing, stooping and squatting. The main bends of the body are labelled: the neck is a, the thoracic (chest) spine is b, the lumbar (lower) back is c, the pelvis is d, the hips are e and the knees are f. These six bends are shown to be evenly balanced on either side of the centre of gravity (vertical line). This holds true in all of the postures. The artwork was published in The Human Foot And The Human Hand, by G M Humphrey, in 1861

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of historical artwork depicting various human body postures. Dating back to the 19th century, these intricate illustrations provide an insightful glimpse into the anatomy and movement of our bodies. The images feature four distinct postures: standing, bowing, stooping, and squatting. Each posture is meticulously outlined, highlighting the key bends in the body. The neck (a), thoracic spine (b), lumbar back (c), pelvis (d), hips (e), and knees (f) are all labeled to emphasize their significance in maintaining balance and stability. Interestingly, these six bends appear evenly balanced on either side of the center of gravity throughout all postures. The monochrome drawings exude a sense of elegance and sophistication while offering valuable anatomical insights. Published by G. M Humphrey in 1861 as part of "The Human Foot And The Human Hand" this artwork stands as a testament to our fascination with understanding the complexities of our own bodies. As we delve into history through this image, we gain a deeper appreciation for how humans have studied and documented their physical form over time. It serves as a reminder that even centuries ago, people were captivated by the beauty and intricacy found within every curve and bone structure that makes up our remarkable human body.
