Wright brothers, US aviation pioneers
Wright brothers, US aviation pioneers. Wilbur (1867-1912, right) and Orville (1871-1948, left) built and flew the first powered aircraft. After experimenting with biplane kites and gliders between 1899 and 1902, they converted one of their gliders into a powered aircraft by attaching a petrol engine and two propellers. This aircraft, the Wright Flyer, made its first flight on 17 December 1903, with Orville at the controls. The flight covered 36 metres, and lasted just 12 seconds. After this, the Wright brothers continued to develop their machines, flying publicly for the first time in 1908 near Le Mans, France. Wilbur, the driving force behind the work, died of typhoid fever in 1912, aged 45

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, who revolutionized aviation with their groundbreaking achievements. United in their pursuit of flight, these American pioneers dedicated themselves to perfecting powered aircraft. The image captures the essence of their partnership as they stand side by side, each contributing their unique skills and unwavering determination. The journey towards success was not an easy one for the Wright brothers. Through years of meticulous experimentation with biplane kites and gliders, they finally accomplished their dream in 1903 when they transformed a glider into a powered aircraft known as the Wright Flyer. With Orville at the controls on that momentous day - December 17th - this remarkable machine soared through the air for a mere 12 seconds but covered an impressive distance of 36 meters. Undeterred by initial challenges, these visionary inventors continued to refine their designs. In 1908 near Le Mans, France, they astounded audiences with public flights that showcased controlled flight like never before seen. Sadly, Wilbur's life was cut short by typhoid fever in 1912 at just 45 years old; however, his legacy lived on through his contributions to aviation history. This extraordinary photograph immortalizes two men whose ingenuity forever changed our world. Their names will forever be synonymous with innovation and progress in engineering and aviation realms alike. As we admire this snapshot from history captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how far humanity has come since those early days when dreams took flight against all odds.
