Backswimmers head. Light micrograph of the head and mouthparts of the backswimmer (Notonecta sp.), also known as the greater water boatman. The head (left) has two hemispherical swellings, which are the compound eyes. Near the eyes are two jointed antennae (blackish-brown). The mouthparts are elongated, extending out to the right, and are enclosed by a segmented tube, the beak or rostrum. Inside the tube are the stylets, used to pierce the skin if this insects prey, and to suck up bodily fluids. One of the stylets is seen protruding from the rostrum. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a backswimmer's head, captured under a light microscope. The backswimmer, also known as the greater water boatman (Notonecta sp. ), is a fascinating aquatic invertebrate found in fresh water habitats. The image reveals two hemispherical swellings on the head, which are actually compound eyes that provide this creature with excellent vision underwater. Positioned near the eyes are two jointed antennae, adding to its sensory capabilities. What stands out prominently are the elongated mouthparts extending towards the right side of the frame. Enclosed within a segmented tube called the beak or rostrum, these mouthparts serve multiple functions for survival. At x14 magnification when printed at 10 centimeters across, this photograph allows us to appreciate every minute detail of this backswimmer's anatomy. It offers valuable insights into their biology and serves as a reminder of nature's incredible diversity. This mesmerizing image from Science Photo Library captures not only scientific curiosity but also highlights the beauty and complexity present within our natural world.
