Framed Print of Japanese sago palm root, light micrograph
Japanese sago palm root. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a root of a Japanese sago palm, (Cycas revoluta). The root has outer layers of cork-like cells (pale-pink) under which is the cortex (orange) supporting a ring of tubular hyphae (deep purple). These hyphae (endotrophic mycorrhiza) contain a fungus and extend into the soil. The fungus passes mineral salts and water to the root, and the plant in return supplies the fungus with sugars and other organic substances. Both plant and fungus benefit in this symbiotic relationship. The central vascular tissue contains phloem sieve cells (red) and xylem tracheids (orange). Magnification: x11 when printed 10 centimetres wide. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © DR KEITH WHEELER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
