Framed Print of John Fowler, British civil engineer

John Fowler (1817-1898), British civil engineer. Fowler designed many railway bridges, including (with Benjamin Baker) the cantilever bridge over the Firth of Forth in Scotland. This 2.4 kilometre long railway bridge was the first major structure made of steel. Construction took eight years from 1882-1890. Fowler also worked on extending the Metropolitan Railway in London, the worlds first underground railway. He was created a baronet in 1890. Artwork from the 5th volume (first period of 1890) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
