John Napier (1550-1617), Scottish mathematician. Napier, from a wealthy family, was educated in France and at St Andrews in Scotland. He studied mathematics as a hobby and published his first logarithm tables in 1614, also developing decimal notation. For the log tables he chose the transendental number e (approximately 2.717) as the base. These Napierian, or natural, logarithms are most relevant to exponential systems. His logarithms were a key mathematical advance that greatly helped Kepler in his calculations of planetary motion. This 19th-century engraving by J. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass).
