Kelly Miller (1863-1939), US mathematician and sociologist. Miller studied at Howard University, Washington DC, one of the institutions pioneering education of African-Americans in general, and former slaves and their children in particular. Miller went on to study at Marylands Johns Hopkins University, the first African-American to do so. He became professor of mathematics at Howard University in 1890, but he also developed his interest in sociology, becoming professor in that subject from 1895-1934. He was also a prolific writer, with a weekly newspaper column. He also wrote on his views on African-American education policies. Photographed published circa 1917. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass).
