Lamprey gill. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the gill region of a lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), a parasitic fish. The spinal area is at upper centre. The lamprey has seven holes each side of the pharynx (centre). Two opposite holes are seen in this section. Each hole passes water into the gill pouches and over the gills (not supported by gill rays) on one side, then across the pharynx to the other side, over the gills in the gill pouches and out through the opposite holes. The gills have feather-like secondary lamellae to aid the extraction of oxygen from the water into the bloodstream. Several large blood vessels are present across centre between the pharynx and the spinal cord. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres high. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass).
