Liberty cargo ship convoy, 1940s C014 / 0525

Liberty cargo ships in a convoy at sea during the Second World War (1939-1945). These cargo ships were built by the USA to replace wartime losses in the merchant fleets of the Allied nations, including the UK. These losses were due to attacks by German U-boats. More than 2700 Liberty ships were built by 18 US shipyards between 1941 and 1945. These ones are carrying guns, tanks, and planes. Photographed in 1942 by the US Navys Office of Public Relations, this image forms part of the FSA-OWI Collection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the awe-inspiring sight of a Liberty cargo ship convoy sailing through the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean during the 1940s. These mighty vessels were a testament to American ingenuity and determination, as they were built to replace merchant fleet losses suffered by Allied nations, including the UK, during World War II. The convoy is brimming with an essential payload of guns, tanks, and planes that would play a crucial role in shaping history. Each ship stands as a symbol of resilience and strength amidst the chaos of war. Photographed in 1942 by the US Navy's Office of Public Relations, this image serves as a poignant reminder of the immense logistical efforts undertaken to support wartime operations. As these ships forge ahead on their perilous journey across treacherous waters infested with German U-boats, they embody not only military might but also hope for victory against tyranny. With over 2700 Liberty ships constructed by US shipyards between 1941 and 1945, this photograph encapsulates just a fraction of America's contribution to securing freedom for its allies. Transporting us back in time to one of humanity's darkest chapters, this historic snapshot offers us glimpses into an era defined by sacrifice and unity. It reminds us that even amidst turmoil at sea, there exists unwavering camaraderie among those who sail together towards shared goals – protecting liberty and ensuring peace prevails over conflict.
