Luna 3 spacecraft. Replica model of the unmanned Soviet Luna 3 spacecraft. This was launched on 4 October 1959. It was the third spacecraft to visit the Moon, and the first to return pictures of the previously unseen far side of the Moon, taking the photographs on 7 October 1959 and transmitting the pictures to Earth on 18 October 1959. The craft had radio communication and telemetry systems, an automated system that processed the photographic film, gas jets for stabilization and photoelectric cells to orientate itself with the Moon and Sun. It weighed 279 kilograms. Photographed in 1969 at the USSR Economic Achievements Exhibition, Moscow. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass).
