Orlov's military career began at a young age, and he quickly rose through the ranks, earning the title of General-Adjutant in 1833. During the Crimean War (1853-1856), Orlov served as the Russian ambassador to France, where he played a crucial role in maintaining diplomatic relations between Russia and the Western powers. His efforts helped to prevent a potential alliance between France and the Ottoman Empire against Russia. Orlov's diplomatic successes were not limited to the Crimean War.
