Drilling an Oil Well - Boring by Turbine
Drilling an Oil Well - Boring by Turbine. Liquid mud is pumped at high pressure through a non-revolving pipe to a turbo drill (shown in the inset enlargement) at the bottom of the well. The casing of the turbo which is fixed to the pipe and therefore cannot revolve, contains a small turbine. As the mud flows through the turbine it makes it turn. The turbines shaft is connected with the drill through gearing, so the drill also is rotated. Having done its work, the mud escapes at the bottom of the casing and flows back to the surface outside the pipe. Date: circa 1920s

Drilling an Oil Well: Boring by Turbine - A Technological Marvel of the 1920s This photograph showcases the innovative process of drilling an oil well using a turbine drilling method, circa 1920s. The intricate machinery depicted in the image represents a significant milestone in the history of oil exploration and drilling technology. At the heart of the operation, a non-revolving pipe transports liquid mud to a turbo drill located at the bottom of the well. An enlargement inset on the right illustrates the turbo drill, which houses a fixed casing containing a small turbine. As mud flows through the turbine, it generates power, causing the turbine to spin. The turbine's shaft is connected to the drill through gearing, resulting in the drill's rotation. Once the drill completes its task, the mud escapes from the casing's bottom and returns to the surface outside the pipe. This drilling method revolutionized the oil industry by enabling more efficient and effective drilling operations. The cross-section view of the drilling process offers a fascinating glimpse into the complex layers of rock and soil underground, highlighting the intricacies involved in oil exploration. The turbine drilling method, with its non-revolving pipe and fixed casing, paved the way for advancements in drilling technology, ultimately shaping the industry as we know it today. This historical photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of early oil explorers and innovators.
