1207 1231 Enormous Hospitals Hungary Married Orphaned Piety Providing Roses Spent Amounts Elizabeth Schlei

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the pious and compassionate Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, also known as Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia or Saint Elisabeth of Hungary-Thuringia, who lived from 1207 to 1231. Elizabeth was the daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary and Gertrude the Babenberg of Austria. At the age of 14, she was married to Landgrave Louis IV of Thuringia, but her devotion to God remained unwavering throughout her marriage and motherhood. Elizabeth is depicted in this print with a crown of roses on her head, symbolizing her martyrdom and her deep love for the poor. The cross in her hand represents her strong faith and her dedication to serving those in need. Her sainthood is attributed to her extraordinary acts of charity, particularly her enormous contributions to hospitals and care for orphaned children. During the 13th century, Elizabeth founded several hospitals and almshouses in Hungary and Thuringia, providing shelter, food, and medical care to the sick, the poor, and the destitute. She also established a hospice for lepers, defying societal norms and risking her own health to care for these outcasts. Elizabeth's legacy extended beyond her lifetime, inspiring countless acts of kindness and generosity throughout Europe and beyond. This historical print serves as a poignant reminder of the power of compassion, faith, and selflessness, and the enduring impact of one woman's commitment to improving the lives of others. Elizabeth's story continues to resonate with people today, inspiring us to follow in her footsteps and make a difference in our own communities.
