Buffon Cockatoo Complements Goliath Lesson Ornithology Palm Primevere Rene Aterrimus Probosciger

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the striking features of the Palm Cockatoo, Probosciger aterrimus (also known as Microglossum nigerrimum), a large and distinctive bird native to the tropical rainforests of New Guinea and northeastern Australia. The Palm Cockatoo is the largest of all cockatoos, with an impressive size that earns it the nickname "Goliath." Its black plumage is adorned with white feathers on its wings and tail, creating a striking contrast. Its most distinctive feature, however, is the elongated, curved, and featherless red and black proboscis, which resembles a horn. This feature is not used for breathing or smelling, but rather for producing loud and complex vocalizations. This beautiful illustration is taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838. Buffon's "Natural History" was a groundbreaking work that covered a wide range of natural phenomena, and the "Lessons Complements" were intended as supplements to the main text. Primevere's illustrations were renowned for their high-quality engravings, which were produced using the copperplate technique. This technique involved creating an image on a copper plate, which was then inked and pressed onto paper to create a print. The intricate details of the Palm Cockatoo's plumage and proboscis are beautifully captured in this illustration, making it a valuable addition to any collection of zoological or ornithological works.
