EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the sleek and innovative Chester Swea Pea NX8400H, a formula one racer designed and built by Art Chester of Chicago, Illinois, in 1947. Powered by an 85hp Continental C85 engine, the Swea Pea boasted a wingspan of 17 feet 8 inches and a length of 16 feet 0 inches. With its distinctive Y-tailed design, the Swea Pea was a true engineering marvel of its time. Two of these midget racers were built, with the second one, the Kauffold Sky Baby, featuring a conventional tail instead of the Y-tail design. The registration number for this modified aircraft was N8400H, and it was flown by Bill Broadback, Lynn Kauffold, and Paul Penrose. The success of the Swea Pea inspired the creation of a second aircraft with a conventional tail, named the Swea Pea II or N4000K (also known as ARC, for Air Race Chester). Unfortunately, on April 24, 1949, the Swea Pea II crashed at San Diego, resulting in the tragic death of Art Chester. Despite this unfortunate incident, the legacy of the Chester Swea Pea NX8400H lives on as a testament to Art Chester's ingenuity and passion for aviation.
