EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning coloured copper engraving depicts the Arolla pine, or Pinus cembra, a resilient and adaptable coniferous tree native to the European Alps and other mountain ranges in Europe and Asia. The image is based on a watercolour painting by the renowned Austrian botanical artist Ferdinand Bauer, and was published as part of Abraham B. Lambert's comprehensive work, "A Description of the Genus Pinus," in 1803. The Arolla pine is characterized by its short, stout, and twisted trunk, with branches that spread out in a dense, conical shape. The tree's needle-like leaves, which are arranged in clusters of two or three, are covered in a waxy, blue-green coating that provides protection against harsh alpine conditions. The needles are adapted to withstand the extreme temperatures and limited sunlight of the mountain environment, and can remain on the tree for up to five years. The cones of the Arolla pine are small and cylindrical, with a distinctive, prickly surface that helps to prevent damage from wind and snow. The cones open to release their seeds in the late summer or early fall, allowing them to be dispersed by the wind. This beautiful illustration not only showcases the aesthetic appeal of the Arolla pine, but also provides valuable insights into the anatomy and adaptations of this remarkable tree. The intricate details of the engraving, combined with the meticulous accuracy of Bauer's watercolour, make this a truly exceptional work of botanical art.
