1807 1873 Arctic Discoverer Explorer Mcclure Northwest Passage Mesurier

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Robert John Le Mesurier McClure (1807-1873), a distinguished naval officer and explorer, is depicted in this photograph. McClure is best known for his role in the discovery of the Northwest Passage, a long-sought-after sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic. Born on January 31, 1807, in County Antrim, Ireland, McClure joined the Royal Navy at a young age and served in various capacities, including as a captain on HMS Hecla and HMS Investigator. In 1850, McClure set sail from England in search of the elusive Northwest Passage, leading an expedition aboard HMS Investigator. Despite facing numerous challenges, including treacherous ice floes, harsh weather conditions, and dwindling supplies, McClure's determination and leadership ultimately paid off. On August 25, 1854, he and his crew successfully navigated the passage, becoming the first to achieve this feat without the aid of modern technology. McClure's discovery of the Northwest Passage was a significant achievement in the history of Arctic exploration and opened up new possibilities for trade and communication between Europe and Asia. He was knighted by Queen Victoria in recognition of his accomplishments and continued to serve in the Royal Navy until his retirement in 1868. This photograph captures Sir Robert John Le Mesurier McClure in his later years, a testament to his enduring legacy as a brave and resourceful explorer who helped unlock the mysteries of the Arctic.
