This engraving, published in the Spanish magazine "La Ilustracion Espanola y Americana" in 1872, depicts a military camp during the Third Carlist War (1872-1876) in the Cantabrian region of Spain, specifically in the city of Santander. The Carlist Wars were a series of conflicts between the supporters of Carlos VII, a claimant to the Spanish throne, and the forces of the liberal government. In this image, we see a large encampment of Carlist forces, with numerous tents pitched in a clearing. Soldiers are shown preparing for battle, sharpening their swords and loading muskets. A chariot, drawn by horses, is present in the foreground, suggesting that the Carlist army may be preparing for a strategic move. The soldiers are dressed in the traditional uniform of the Carlists, which included a red sash and a beret, known as a "sardinero." The rugged terrain of Cantabria, with its rolling hills and dense forests, can be seen in the background. The Third Carlist War was a particularly brutal conflict, with both sides committing atrocities against civilians and soldiers. The war ended in 1876 with the defeat of the Carlists, and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy under Alfonso XII.
