Framed Print of Mikhail Lomonosov, Russian polymath
Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov (1711-1765), Russian polymath. Born in a remote fishing village, Lomonosov went to Moscow to gain his education, later studying in St Petersburg, and in Germany. Back in Russia, he worked as a professor of chemistry and founded the Moscow State University (now named after him), and also became a secretary of state for Russia. In science, he repeated Boyles experiments and anticipated Lavoisier by proving Boyles phlogiston theory to be incorrect. Other work included astronomy, natural history, and the physics of heat. He was also a poet, writer and mosaic artist. This statue is in his home village of Lomonosovo (renamed from Deniskova in his honour), in northern European Russia. Photographed in 1961.
