Framed Print of Three monaural stethoscopes, circa 1870 C017 / 6956
Three two-piece monaural stethoscopes made from ivorine and nickel (left), ebony (centre) and gutta percha and rubber (right). The rubber ring on the stethoscope on the right was designed to be used additionally as a percussor. French physician, Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec originally invented the monaural stethoscope in 1816. Their design is essentially a hollow metal cylinder, the bell shaped end is placed on the patients body and the flat end, to the physicians ear. Monaural stethoscopes were the earliest form of diagnostic device for listening to internal sounds of the body (auscultation). These examples date from 1870, England.
