Framed Print of Observations of the Sun, 1870
Observations of the Sun, 1870. Series of photographs of the Sun made in March and April 1870 by US astronomer Lewis Morris Rutherfurd (1816-1892). Rutherfurd, named at upper right, was renowned for his early photographs of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars. This series of photographs starts at lower left and progresses chronologically from left to right. The dark spots visible on the solar disc are sunspots, areas of magnetic activity that are cooler than the rest of the Suns surface. This photographic sequence was presented to the Royal Astronomical Society by British astronomer James Buckingham on 13 January 1871. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
