Riggenbach cog railway system, 1880s C017 / 6910
Riggenbach cog railway system. 19th-century artwork of a locomotive on a cog railway based on the Riggenbach system. This cog (or rack) railway system was invented by Swiss engineer Niklaus Riggenbach (1817-1899). Cog railways are used in steep mountain areas where a third toothed rail meshes with cogs on a train and its locomotive to support them as they ascend the incline. One such cog is seen under this locomotive at centre. Riggenbach was granted a patent for his system in 1863, and the first mountain railway using it opened in 1871. This wood engraving dates from circa 1888

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage wood engraving from the 1880s depicts a locomotive on the Riggenbach cog railway system, an engineering marvel invented by Swiss engineer Niklaus Riggenbach in the 19th century. The artwork showcases the intricate details of this technological feat, with a third toothed rail visible under the locomotive at its center. Cog railways like this one were specifically designed for steep mountain areas, where traditional train systems would struggle to ascend inclines. The Riggenbach cog railway system revolutionized transportation in Switzerland and other mountainous regions around Europe. With his patent granted in 1863, Riggenbach's invention paved the way for the first mountain railway using this system to open in 1871. This black and white illustration captures a moment frozen in time, offering us a glimpse into history and showcasing both the beauty and functionality of this remarkable mode of transport. As we admire this aged reproduction print, we can't help but appreciate how it represents not only an important piece of engineering history but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our ability to conquer challenging terrains. Whether you're fascinated by trains or simply captivated by historical documents such as these, this image transports us back to an era when technology was rapidly advancing and reshaping our world.
