1829 Edinburgh University time of Darwin
Copperplate engraved view of the University at around the time Darwin was there. Drawn by Thomas Shepherd, engraved by W. Lizars. Published Jones and Co London in 1829. Charles Darwin studied medicine at Edinburgh University from 1825 (aged 16) to 1827. He found the lectures dull (see Darwin Jameson in this collection) and hated seeing operations before anaesthetic. In his second year he joined the Plinian Society of Natural History. He became close to the lecturer Robert Grant but at the time was shocked by Grants transmutationist (proto-evolutionary) views. Darwin moved on from Edinburgh to study Theology at Cambridge

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1829, providing a glimpse into the Edinburgh University during Charles Darwin's time. The intricate copperplate engraving, skillfully drawn by Thomas Shepherd and engraved by W. Lizars, showcases the grandeur of this esteemed institution. Published by Jones and Co in London, this artwork captures an important period in Darwin's life. During his tenure at Edinburgh University from 1825 to 1827, young Darwin pursued studies in medicine. However, he found himself disenchanted with the lectures which failed to ignite his passion for learning. The image of witnessing surgeries without anesthesia haunted him deeply. In his second year at university, Darwin sought solace and intellectual stimulation through joining the Plinian Society of Natural History. It was here that he formed a close bond with Robert Grant, a lecturer whose transmutationist ideas shocked him at that time. Little did Darwin know then that these very concepts would later lay the foundation for his groundbreaking theory of evolution. After leaving Edinburgh behind, Darwin continued his academic journey by studying theology at Cambridge University. This remarkable illustration serves as a testament to both Darwin's formative years and the enduring legacy he left on scientific thought. Displayed proudly in museums worldwide today, Paul D. Stewart's artistry immortalizes not only Charles Darwin but also highlights the significance of education and exploration within institutions like Edinburgh University – where endless forms were contemplated and revolutionary ideas took shape under its hallowed roof.
