EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Arnaldus de Villa Nova, a prominent Catalan alchemist and physician from the 13th century. Also known as Arnaud de Villeneuve, he left an indelible mark on history with his groundbreaking achievements. Born in Valencia and active at the court of Aragon, he gained fame for being the first to distill wines in France back in 1250. While his expertise as a physician was widely recognized, it was his later work in Paris that truly solidified his reputation. Teaching for many years at the prestigious Montpellier school of medicine, Arnaldus de Villa Nova's contributions to medical science were invaluable. The engraving itself is a remarkable piece of art from "Grands Hommes et Grands Faits de l'Industrie" (Great Men and Great Facts of Industry), published in France around 1880. It beautifully captures the essence of this historical figure with intricate details such as his frilled collar and distinctive hat. Arnaldus de Villa Nova's legacy extends beyond medicine and alchemy; he also authored an early book on wine called "Liber de Vinis". This multifaceted individual played a significant role not only in European history but also within the drinks industry, particularly as a wine maker and liqueur expert. This print serves as a timeless reminder of one man's immense impact on both scientific progress and cultural heritage during the fascinating era of medieval Europe.
