Black hole model
Black hole. Computer model of distortions in the view of the accretion disc due to the immense gravity of the rotating black hole it orbits. The view is from above the axis of the holes rotation looking towards the hole (centre). Temperature is colour-coded: orange (cool) to blue/white (hot). Four hot spots rotate anticlockwise around the hole. Ring-shaped secondary and tertiary images of the disc are also seen. These are due to the bend- ing of light by gravity (gravitational lensing). A black hole is an area where the gravitational field is so strong that light cannot escape. Work done at Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, USA
