EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the bustling activity within a 19th-century brewery in Sevres, France. The image captures the barley storage room, where diligent workers are seen diligently filling wheeled containers with precious barley grains. With focused determination, they then spread out the grains on the floor using rakes. This crucial stage initiates germination and sets in motion the intricate process of beer production. The significance of this historical moment is underscored by its depiction as an engraving from "Grands Hommes et Grands Faits de l'Industrie" a publication that celebrated remarkable achievements in industry during its time. Dating back to around 1880, this artwork offers us a glimpse into an era when industrialization was transforming various sectors, including brewing. Notably, Sevres boasted the first industrial brewery in 1852, making it a pioneering hub for technological advancements in beer manufacturing. As we observe these hardworking individuals tending to their tasks amidst barrels and equipment strewn across the room's floor, we gain insight into both their dedication and the scale of production during that period. This monochrome illustration not only highlights human ingenuity but also serves as a testament to French history and European industry at large. It reminds us of how far we have come since those early days while honoring those who paved the way for modern brewing practices.
