Coastal fishing net in India C017 / 9080
Coastal fishing net in India. Chinese fishing net being operated from a jetty on a sandy shoreline in Kochi (Cochin), Kerala, India. These fishing nets (also called cheena vala) are fixed and used as shore-operated lift nets. Using a counterweight system (centre left), they are lowered into the sea and then raised again after a short interval. The name derives from the theory that they were introduced by the Chinese, but it is now thought that they were introduced by the Portuguese from Macau. Photographed in 2013

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of coastal fishing in India. The image showcases a Chinese fishing net being skillfully operated from a jetty on a sandy shoreline in Kochi, Kerala. Known as cheena vala, these traditional shore-operated lift nets are an integral part of the region's marine culture. The photograph highlights the ingenious counterweight system (visible at the center-left) used to lower and raise these fixed nets into the sea. It is believed that these nets were introduced by the Portuguese from Macau, although their name suggests Chinese origins. This cultural fusion adds another layer of intrigue to this centuries-old fishing technique. Against a backdrop of clear blue skies and low tide, an adult fisherman can be seen operating this mechanical apparatus with precision and expertise. The image beautifully portrays how technology intertwines with tradition as fishermen harness both ancient knowledge and modern tools to sustain their livelihoods. This snapshot offers viewers a glimpse into India's rich coastal heritage, where generations have relied on such equipment to navigate the bountiful seas. It serves as a reminder of our deep connection with nature and how communities adapt their practices over time while preserving cultural traditions. Photographed in 2013 by Tony Camacho for Science Photo Library, this image encapsulates not only the beauty of India's coastline but also its people's resilience and resourcefulness in sustaining themselves through time-honored methods passed down through generations.
