Artists impression of Tertiary period landscape

Artists impression of a Tertiary period landscape. This period extended from 65 to about 2 million years ago and is divided into five epochs: the Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene. Dinosaurs died out early on in the Tertiary, and mammals progressed rapidly. This illustration shows some of the reptiles and mammals of the epoch, which included the elephant- like dinotherium and mastodon, also the sabre- toothed tiger. Anthropoid apes appeared, and towards the end the present forms of continents developed. Temperatures dropped signalling the beginning of the ice-ages at the end of the Pliocene

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us on a journey back in time, offering an artist's vivid interpretation of the awe-inspiring landscape during the Tertiary period. Spanning from 65 to about 2 million years ago, this era witnessed remarkable transformations and diversifications in Earth's inhabitants. As we gaze upon this illustration, we are transported to a world where dinosaurs have long vanished, making way for the rapid progression of mammals. The scene comes alive with fascinating creatures that once roamed our planet - from the elephant-like dinotherium and mastodon to the formidable sabre-toothed tiger. These magnificent beings ruled over their respective habitats, showcasing nature's incredible evolutionary prowess. Notably, anthropoid apes make their debut during this epoch, hinting at the origins of our own species. Towards the end of the Tertiary period, we witness continental shifts shaping familiar landmasses as they exist today. The artist skillfully captures both beauty and scientific accuracy in depicting this ancient landscape. Moreover, it serves as a reminder that our world has undergone countless changes throughout its history - including dramatic temperature drops that marked the onset of ice-ages by the conclusion of the Pliocene epoch. This remarkable print is courtesy of Science Photo Library – an invaluable resource for those seeking knowledge and inspiration within fields such as science, geology, and Earth studies.
