Distillation apparatus, 19th century
Distillation apparatus, 19th century artwork. The French distiller Isaac Berard is testing the system he developed circa 1805. He is adding coal to the fire that is heating the liquid to be distilled. The vapours pass through a series of condensers (lower left) and the concentrated distillate is collected at bottom left. In the early years of the 19th century, a great number of distillation patents were filed by French distillers and winemakers.
