Dr. bolchs sphygmometer, circa 1880

Bloch sphygmometer dating from 1880 France. This was a compression device used for blood pressure measurement. The physician would place his finger over the patients radial pulse and with his other hand, the metal sphygmometer would be held vertically with the receiver end (a cork cushion) placed on his fingernail. Downward force would be applied to instrument onto the fingernail until the radial pulse could no longer be felt. A spring dial would register the level of pressure required to stop the pulse on a numbered scale. This number would indicate the patients blood pressure. The Bloch sphygmometer was soon replaced by more accurate instruments

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Dr. Bolch's Sphygmometer, a remarkable medical device dating back to 1880 France. This antique instrument was designed for blood pressure measurement using a unique compression method. The physician would delicately place his finger on the patient's radial pulse while holding the metal sphygmometer vertically with one hand. The receiver end, featuring a cork cushion, would be carefully positioned on the patient's fingernail. Applying downward force onto the instrument until the radial pulse ceased to be felt, a spring dial would register the level of pressure required to halt the pulse on a numbered scale. The Bloch Sphygmometer played an essential role in early medical practice; however, it was eventually replaced by more accurate instruments as technology advanced. This photograph captures not only an intriguing historical artifact but also represents significant progress in healthcare and cardiovascular medicine. Set against a black background, this image highlights both the intricate design of this nineteenth-century apparatus and its importance in measuring blood pressure accurately. With its rich history and French origins, Dr. Bolch's Sphygmometer stands as a testament to human ingenuity and innovation within the field of medicine. This photo is part of Science Photo Library's extensive collection that explores various scientific disciplines through visually stunning imagery – providing valuable insights into our past while inspiring future advancements in healthcare and beyond.
