Faradays spherical condenser
Spherical condenser. This device was used by British scientist Michael Faraday (1791-1867) to show that electricity can be considered a force. In the 1830s electricity was considered to be a weightless fluid. In this condenser, Faraday was able to pass a current between cup and ball, even though they were separated by gas, liquids or solids. This object is preserved at the Royal Institution, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Faraday's spherical condenser, a groundbreaking device that revolutionized the understanding of electricity in the 19th century. Developed by British scientist Michael Faraday, this apparatus served as concrete evidence that electricity could be considered a force rather than a weightless fluid, challenging prevailing beliefs at the time. The image captures the essence of this historical artefact against a pristine white background, allowing us to focus on its intricate details. The spherical condenser consists of two main components: a cup and ball separated by various mediums such as gas, liquids, or solids. Despite these barriers, Faraday demonstrated that an electric current could pass between them. Preserved at the Royal Institution in London, this object serves as both proof and testament to Faraday's pioneering experiments in electrical science. It stands as an emblematic symbol of his relentless pursuit of knowledge and his significant contributions to physics. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back to the 1800s when scientific discovery was flourishing. We can almost envision Faraday himself working diligently in his laboratory with this very apparatus - conducting experiments and unraveling mysteries about electricity. This print is not just an item for display; it represents history captured within its frame. It invites us to delve into our past and appreciate how far we have come in our understanding of one of nature's most enigmatic forces - electricity.
