Holland submarine, New York, 1890s

Holland submarine, New York, 1890s. Historical artwork of the Holland VI prototype submarine, moored at a dock in New York, USA. It was designed by the Irish engineer John P. Holland (1841-1914). After moving to the USA in 1873, he designed and built several submarines, including the Fenian Ram (1881). His sixth Holland design was launched in 1897. A modified version of this was accepted by the US Navy in 1900 as the basis of its first submarines. The US Navy Holland submarines were about 20 metres long, armed with aerial torpedos (outlet at lower left), underwater Whitehead torpedos, and a dynamite gun. They had a crew of seven, could dive to 12 metres, and reached speeds of 5 knots. Artwork published in 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork captures the Holland VI prototype submarine, designed by Irish engineer John P. Holland, moored at a dock in New York during the 1890s. The image showcases the technological advancements of its time and provides a glimpse into naval warfare innovation. John P. Holland's journey from Ireland to the United States led him to become one of the pioneers in submarine design. His sixth creation, launched in 1897, became the basis for the US Navy's first submarines after being accepted in 1900. The US Navy Holland submarines featured impressive specifications for their era. Measuring approximately 20 meters long, armed with aerial torpedoes and underwater Whitehead torpedoes (visible at lower left), they also boasted a dynamite gun. These vessels could dive up to 12 meters and reach speeds of 5 knots while accommodating a crew of seven. The vibrant colors used in this illustration bring life to this piece of maritime history as it highlights both its significance and impact on naval technology development during that period. As we observe this print from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of John P. Holland's remarkable contributions to submarine design and his lasting legacy within North America's military history.
